Danerich gelding The Siscos Kid ($2.60) registered a fifth career win when second-up over 1200-metres at Casterton on Sunday. The seven-year-old galloper was taken straight to the front by jockey Jack Hill, where he held the rail in a three-horse battle for the lead in the early stages. Hill kept his horse rolling and settled a length clear of Shalily ($4.40) and Edna Doreen ($19), who were both placed under pressure to chase at the 400-metre mark. The latter dropped off at the top of the straight, gifting equal favourite Sun Samurai ($2.60) a saloon passage through to chase. The Siscos Kid had a head full of steam however, and kept kicking strongly to defy all challengers and pull away to win by 1.8-lengths on the line. Jockey Hill was pleased with how the race played out. “I thought I’d end up outside the leader, but he showed good enough speed to take it up and control the race”, he said. “Once we straightened up and I gave him a squeeze, he really picked up and found the line.
“I thought it was a good win”.
Henry was relieved to return this galloper to the winner’s stall for the first time since February last year. “He railed really well, gave a really good kick at the top of the straight, and was very much comfortable in winning”, he said post-race. “Obviously, it’s been a while between drinks. That’s more through an injury than anything else.
“I think the horse is going well”.
Henry noted his galloper could stay in similar company next start before rising in class should he win again, and will likely return to the races later this month.
The Siscos Kid now has five wins from twenty-seven career starts, pushing his earnings past $130,000 on the weekend.
