SINCE Henry Dwyer bought Sonntag in December there has hardly been a dull moment and the Caulfield trainer hopes that trend continues in tomorrow’s Queensland Derby.
“It’s been a great story so far. I’m hoping for another chapter,” Dwyer said.
Dwyer bought Sonntag at the Darley dispersal sale for $58,000.
Sonntag was gelded but soon after Dwyer put him in work in February, he suffered an infected tendon sheath.
“It was 50-50 whether he would live. Then once he pulled through that, it was 50-50 whether he would race,” he said.
Sonntag will be Dwyer’s first Group 1 runner and is a $13 chance with TAB.
Dwyer worked with Robert Smerdon at Caulfield but branched out on his own 11 months ago.
Sonntag will be only his 35th runner as a trainer.
“He is as well as he could be. The three things I was worried about with him have been allayed — travelling, sleeping and eating,” he said.
Dwyer said he bought Sonntag as he thought he was a city horse and could make a nice stayer. At his fourth start for Dwyer, Sonntag won his way into the Derby at Eagle Farm with a last-start win at Caulfield.
