Moscow has opposition seeing Red

An eight-year-old mare from Victoria having her 43rd start might not have struck fear into her competition at the gates at Morphettville yesterday, but little did her opposition know of the fighting capabilities of our bonny mare Moscow Red.

It resulted in win number eight and prizemoney reaching the $250,000 mark for this stable favourite as Moscow Red outlasted to take out the GH Mumm Handicap with young apprentice Ben Price onboard.

Ben, brother to young gun Victorian apprentice Will Price, claimed his first metropolitan win ahead of a raceday double, with many more to come no doubt.

It was a huge thrill for the young rider, who kept it short and sharp post-race with his feedback to the owners.

“It was a really sound effort then, we had a nice cosy run there just behind the first couple of horses, started to build her up a bit earlier with the weight on her back and she was tough towards the end there and it was a nice honest win.”

Something tells us young Ben is going to let his riding do the talking for him, with his hard work paying off yesterday.

The trainer was more effusive in his praise.

“It was really good to get another win with this mare, she’s done a terrific job today.

“There were some concerns a few months ago with some soundness issues, but she’s come back from those as strong as ever and hopefully she can now continue on with it.

“Ben gave her a lovely ride today, she looked the winner a long way out and while she only just got there she was strong through the line and it was indicative of a horse who is looking for 1600 metres.”

The result does make it tougher for her as she will now going up in grade in what is a tough time of the year with good horses in full swing, with the Coleraine Cup over 1800 metres or the Gold Nugget at Ballarat over the mile potentially her next assignment.

Wherever she goes next, in what is the twilight of her career, she will try her heart out as she always does.
