King conquers Headquarters

Tenacious three-year-old Brung King made it back-to-back wins on Saturday when he charged home to win in the last bound over 1400-metres at Flemington. The gelded son of Crackerjack King had to dig deep, setting out after the well-supported leader Private Jumbo in what looked a hopeless chase until the final fifty metres of the three-year-old race. Apprentice hoop Celine Gaudray demanded an effort of her mount in the closing stages and Brung King responded, pinning the ears back and flashing to the line for a strong victory. “Very tough win from this horse”, Gaudray said post-race. “Once he dug deep, he had a really nice, sharp turn of foot which was obviously enough for today”.

Trainer Dwyer was equally thrilled in the aftermath. “He was terrific in winning. He showed a really good desire to win”. Dwyer noted his galloper hit a flat spot when the sprint went on in the home straight and suggested his next start would be over a mile, with an eye to the 1600-metre Silver Bowl Series final at Flemington on July 1st.

Brung King is building an excellent record, the progressive galloper yet to miss a placing in seven career starts. Saturday’s result made it three wins from four starts this preparation, the only miss being his runner-up effort in very heavy conditions at Warrnambool during the May carnival. With his best yet to come, there’s plenty to look forward to as this gelding test the waters out to a mile.
