Promising mare Electric Impulse registered back-to-back wins on Wednesday when she finished over the top of her rivals at Sandown over 1400-metres. Unleashing a withering burst in the home straight, the four-year-old daughter of Cable Bay carved out some excellent late sectionals, recording the second-fastest final 400-metres of the entire meeting. Jockey John Allen was forced back from a wide gate early, rounding the home bend in second-last position and still six lengths away from eventual runner-up Versilia. Allen navigated his mare to the middle of the track and set out after the frontrunners, where she pinned her ears back and swept past her rivals, the champion hoop sitting up for the photo a length-and-a-quarter in front on the line. “Once I got to the outside at the top of the straight, she was still travelling well”, Allen said post-race. “I was quite confident I was going to pick them up, I was going that well at the top of the straight.
“”She was strong all the way to the line and even through the line”.
Henry was thrilled with his galloper’s performance. “Terrific win by this mare today. She had a bit of class on her opposition today.
“Everything we thought of her getting over further, I think will come to fruition at some stage”.
Electric Impulse will be aimed at the Melbourne Cup Carnival Country Final over a mile at Flemington on Oaks Day, a race carrying $500,000 in prizemoney. The most suitable qualifying heat is at Hamilton in seven weeks, so the mare will have a short freshen-up before resuming work in a fortnight.
Wednesday’s success brought up a third win from five career starts for the talented galloper, two from three this preparation.
