Five-year-old gelding Brungle Raider brought up his third career win on Sunday when he waltzed away from his rivals to win over 2700-metres. In his first try beyond 2000-metres, the son of Rebel Raider looked every bit a staying horse as he won by almost four lengths, jockey Josh Cartwright easing him down for the last 100-metres of the event. The Henry Dwyer-trained galloper jumped well and immediately found a position outside race-leader High Ferocity, Cartwright happy to sit a length astern of Paul Preusker’s pace-setter throughout. Brungle Raider poured the pressure on at the three-furlong marker and took over, High Ferocity with no answer as Brungle Raider surged clear and put the race to bed at the top of the straight. The winning margin could’ve been triple the official figure but Cartwright was kind on his runner who he heaped praise on post-race. “He was perfect. At the hundred you’ll see I eased down, I didn’t want him to blow himself to pieces”, the hoop said. “I feel that at his next start he’ll be even better again”.
The stable will wait to see how their runner comes through the race but a trip to Warrnambool must be on the cards after such a dominant display in wet conditions on the weekend.
