With a name like The Siscos Kid, it’s no surprise that while he is still only early in his career with 12 starts under his belt as a five-year-old, he is maturing each start and took another step forward yesterday as he outlasted his competitors with a gutsy win in the Bet365 BM64 Handicap at Echuca.
His third career win, The Siscos Kid had to do it the hard way from the barrier, sitting three wide the trip before rolling off behind the leaders and streaking away early in the straight, only to just hold on from the fast finishing Court Deep.
He was entitled to tire on his run, but the son of Danerich showed plenty of grit.
“It was a really good win as he did it tough throughout,” said Michael Poy.
“I sat on him as long as I could and with the blinkers on it seemed to really sharpen him up, he sprinted well and luckily enough he hung on after a tough run.”
Henry was impressed The Siscos Kid was able to find a way to win given he didn’t have much luck in the run.
“It was another good win from this horse, he is going through the grades well,” said Henry.
“He certainly didn’t have any favours in the run, getting caught three and four wide the entire trip and he probably got there too soon, which meant he probably switched off, so to still win was a good result.
“He wasn’t even blowing after the race, which means he’s probably got more to give.”
A trip to Adelaide in two weeks may be be on the cards, with Melbourne’s racing calendar going to be to too competitive in the heart of spring for the five-year-old. If Adelaide doesn’t throw up a suitable race, then a small freshen up ahead of another assault in November / December may be on the cards for ‘The Kid’ that keeps maturing.
