Despite carrying 62 kilograms and starting from the widest barrier in the field, Under Oath put on a clinical display today at Murray Bridge to take out the Spry Civil Construction Handicap.
A perfect ride by Mitch Aitken, who has been in great form for the stable of late in SA, saw Under Oath sit outside the leader and favourite in Stan The Caddy and put paid to him on the turn, winning comfortably at the juicy odds of $13.
The gelded son of Star Witness takes his career wins tally to eight and prizemoney just under $300,000.
“It was good to get this old bloke back in the winner’s circle,” said Henry post-race.
“He ran a really good race today and it panned out exactly as we thought it would.
“He’s been really competitive this preparation and that was again on display again today.
“He eyeballed the leader Stan The Caddy at the 400 metre mark who then fell away quickly, leaving him out front a long way from home, but he’s a pretty genuine little horse and found the line well and won pretty easily, even with 62 kilos on his back,” Henry said.
For SA based Victorian jockey Mitch Aitken, it was another win for what has become a purple patch for the stable and the young rider.
“He ran a really good race today, he jumped well from the barrier and put himself in the perfect position from the outset,” said Aitken.
“At the point of the turn we headed the leader and from there I produced him from the 300 metre mark, where he was then good enough to win with 62 kilograms.”
Under Oath is set for another good preparation and will be targeted at the Sheep Hills Cup at Warracknabeel, which looks the perfect race for him. Wherever he finds himself, he will acquit himself well and his fighting spirit will shine through. The bright lights at The Valley will be calling him when the night racing season begins…
