Precious Gem broke through for a black-type success for trainer Henry Dwyer, when sprinting clear to claim the Listed TROA Anniversary Vase (1400m) at Caulfield.
It was the fourth win on the day of a horse that had shifted stables in their career, joining Red Bomber, Miss Promiscuity and Adirondack as recycled winners.
The six-year-old Econsul mare was formerly of the Gwenda Johnstone yard, and Dwyer paid due credit to the Echuca trainer after Precious Gem made it two wins from four starts under his tutelage.
“It’s easy when they’re as hassle-free as she is,” Dwyer said.
“She came to me in terrific condition, really sound – testament to Gwenda Johnstone, who looked after her early days.
“We never put any pressure on her when she didn’t need it – you don’t see horses in her condition at her age now.”

Dwyer said the $72,000 winner’s cheque aside, the black-type in her form-book was crucial.
“I think she had five Stakes placings before today,” he added.
“They’re not worth much at stud unless they’ve won a Stakes race, so its mission accomplished today.
“I’d also like to thank the team at home – this time of year for a trainer is carnage, you’re away – on, off – for three months with the sales. I couldn’t do it without the guys at home, so thanks to them.”
Precious Gem is now bound for the breeding barn, but might yet have a tilt at the Group 1 Tatts Tiara in Queensland before doing so – with connections putting her in the June Magic Millions broodmare sale.
It was the fourth Listed success for jockey Jake Noonan, who also rode her when she was narrowly beaten fresh in the Listed Hareeba Stakes on Mornington Cup Day.
“Massive thrill for me – I can’t thank Henry and his owners enough,” Noonan said.
“They’ve given me great opportunities, and he doesn’t hesitate to put you in good races.
“This mare ran terrific first-up, and her second-up record this distance was impeccable.
“I wouldn’t have got here without Henry, and my manager Matt Jenkins – he’s done a lot of work getting my weight down to 54kg.”
