The Dwyer stable have one runner engaged on a genuinely heavy track at Ballarat today.
Race 4 – Spylark
Jockey – Blaike McDougall
1400m – Barrier 3
Four-year-old mare Spylark has a golden opportunity to break her maiden status today in a race decimated by scratchings on her home deck. The daughter of Niagara meets just three competitors on a substantially rain-affected surface, but has proven herself on capable heavy ground at her only Australian start at Bendigo in August. She ran third there when beaten under a length, with subsequent winner Miss Moonshine finishing a further length-and-a-half back in fourth. That form is well good enough to be winning here and, providing she behaves herself pre-race at the barriers, we should see the ex-kiwi breakthrough later on today.
From the trainer:
She’s shown that she handles wet tracks…the breed generally handle it.
The obvious issue is her barrier manners.
It’s pretty much her race to lose if she gets in the gates and she goes around and nothing goes wrong prior.
Currently, Spylark is a $1.55 favourite in the market.
